Toy collecting is not only fun, but it will take you to corners of the country or the world to find that perfect toy to add to your collection. The collection of toys usually starts out as a hobby which can sometimes turn into a full-time job. Research and some investigation are required to ensure that you can locate and obtain an original toy.
Years ago, a toy collector had to drive locally and even across country to estate sales and large flea markets to find their missing toys. Today, the Internet has made the entire process of toy collecting a piece of cake. There are so many places online in which you can find and buy items from all over the world.
The Collection
Every collector has their own unique toys that they search for. The toys might be from a particular era only or from a particular television show that aired for a brief time. There is usually a unique reason behind every toy that the collector searches for and when the toy has been obtained, the collector is ecstatic with enthusiasm about the purchase. Toy collecting may even become an obsession.
Once in awhile, a collector may find a toy that is quite rare and wouldn’t go with their collection. When this happens, they will still purchase the toy due to the rareness. Otherwise, they will spend much of their free time digging through boxes and searching the web for that missing and must have toy.
Once the rare toys have been acquired, the collector prides themselves in the collection that they have built over the course of time. Although they don’t play or use the toys, they will not sell the collection. There is too much heart and soul in stake for their most prized collection.
Almost Perfect to Perfect Condition
What are the perimeters to toy collecting? What makes the final decision to the collector if he will buy the toy or not? There are some criteria that must first be met before the collector will be somewhat serious about a purchase.
Original packaging is a must and it’s even better when the toy is still sealed within that original container. The packaging should be in almost “like new” condition. If the container is opened, the object(s) inside should have never been played with. The more it looks like the collector pulled it off the store shelf, the more the item is worth and the more the collector will want it.
Many toys that were from the 1960′s era or earlier have been lost or destroyed. When a toy from this time period or before is discovered, it’s the jackpot for a toy collector. When these are discovered, which is more often than the ones described above, the condition is not as good but they are typically still is good shape considering.
If an older toy has been found but never been played with, however it doesn’t have the original packaging it is still considered a good buy but the original packing is preferred. If the toy is extremely rare, the collector may or may not purchase it. Toy collecting is a lot of fun and you might be surprised how addicting it can be.
