Article by Tom Stevens

We all grow older every day, but many of us do not really grow up. Even though our hair is turning more and more gray or maybe falling out, there is still that little child inside of us that want to be young, free and careless again. What better way to keep that child inside of you than getting a radio-controlled car that can achieve supersonic speeds. Road cars are becoming more and more restriced and if you are anything like me, you always stay to the speed limit as there are always kids in the car. The old “people-mover” does not really scream fun and whenever I am alone and put the foot down, little to nothing happens.

That is why I decided about four months ago to get a radio-controlled car. Not only can I have a whole lot of fun driving it, the kids love watching as well. Who knows, when by boy grows older I might let him have a go as well. It is a great father-son bonding experience and my wife loves it when I take him to the empty car park on Sundays. I get to have fun, my son loves watching and my wife gets some alone time. It is a win-win for all of us.

So let me tell you about the RC car I decided to go for. After lots of researching online I ended up with the Traxxas Nitro 4-tec 3.3. Long and complicated name, I know, so let’s just call it the Nitro. The reason I ended up with the Nitro is simple. It is the fastest and best handling RC supercar out there, built by a company renowned for their quality products, customer satisfaction and support.

This beast of a machine is powered by a TRX 3.3 engine capable of speeds well in excess of 70mph. Videos on YouTube show people tuning this thing to do well above 90mph. In any case, it is ridiculously fast and I have experienced wheel spin in second gear. Controlling the Nitro is not easy and luckily it comes with a function that allows you to reduce the power output by half when first starting out. This allows you to get you feet wet so to speak and prepare you for the day that you unleash all of its power. It took me about a month or about 12 hours until I felt I was ready to handle 70mph+ and to start off with I have to admit it was scary.

What surprises me the most about the Nitro is how well it handles, even at speeds above 70mph. It is almost as if it is glued to the ground and you are hard pressed to make it lose its grip. If you get the chance, get your hands on one of these. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. This is what keeps my spirits up when driving from A to B in the people-mover every week. At least I know that come Sunday I will be in control of 70mph of screeching tyres and a whole lot of fun!
