While school and fun can still be associated with each other, education and fun have been difficult to combine in the traditional system of education. Because school translates into heavy duty work for a child – it means jobs like working on getting things right, acquiring teacher and peer acceptance, winning competitions, fun can be a mighty tool to help kids deal with learning so that it does not turn into a challenge. Games is one tool which carries a high fun quotient. This makes them effective tools of teaching as it helps students to apply what they have learnt and helps teachers to evaluate students practically. But they often bring in the spirit of competition which means proving that one is 'better than the other' rather than 'better with the other'. The difference between 'fun with' and 'fun of' is brought to light to avoid making sensitive slips. An experienced teacher knows that before work can be fun, fun must be worked at, to ensure that at no point does fun become counter-productive. This is a matter of practice and attitude.When students have fun it brings about an automatic engagement in th e learning. Fun for students generally comprises of questions which are open-ended, activities which are challenging, involve movement and are interactive. Activities that help children explore a range of abilities and thus help them discover themselves go a long way in reinforcing the belief in the necessity and benefits of self learning and learning about the self. Activities that combine various skills with momentum help to stimulate their latent potential of being able to be completely present with a task at hand. The experience of total involvement is one that brings great satisfaction regard;ess of the outcome of the activity. Students describe hands-on activities as fun because it gives them the real-world experience and understanding/ relevance. Nature activities are fun as it connects us with the essential and the powerful teacher within us. Rewards are an all time favourite across all ages as they bring home both the importance of fair appreciation, and quality work. Fun takes away the sting of not having it right. A student becomes ready to take a risk with new learning when he/she is sure that school is a safe place to assert his opinions. This knowing can create profound difference in the life of a child whose experience as a student will mark and set the course of his future.
