Article by Jon Simpson

If you are planning a holiday to Jo'burg for the whole family, they'll all be in good hands. The city has a whole host of things to see and do, from museums to galleries, shops and restaurants. However, if you are looking for ways to keep the younger members of your family entertained, look no further.

Jo'burg has some brilliant activities and exciting venues that your kids will love…and everyone knows, if the kids are happy, the whole family are happy!

Here are some of the best suggestions on where to take your little ones…

Wild Day Out

Always a winner with children; Jo'burg Zoo in Parkview is an animal paradise with lions and elephants, monkeys and gorillas, seals and polar bears. The farmyard section, designed especially for under-sixes, also has cuddly animals which can be picked up and petted. Kids can ride on the tractor ferry, do an organised trot around the zoo on a little horse, or even go on a moonlight tour . There are always educational events taking place too. With green lawns and plenty of space for running around, the zoo is perfect for a picnic and family day out.Feathered Friends

Ducks and geese are just waiting for the little ones to throw them some bread, or perhaps something tastier. Zoo Lake, Emmarentia Dam and Gillooly’s Farm are the best places to get close to our feathered friends, but adult supervision is essential to stop any wandering children from falling into the water. All three places have lovely lawn space where you can fly kites, roller blade or just kick back and picnic.

Exotic Birds

If ducks and geese are just a little too ordinary then get close to some really exotic birds at the Montecasino Bird Gardens, where kids can walk along elevated wooden walkways inside a large aviary and be almost nose to beak with these colourful creatures. There are over 100 exotic species of birds as well as bird shows held twice a day featuring owls, cranes, pelicans and vultures. Children can feed a collection of small animals too like including iguanas, marmasets, tamarins, snakes and colourful frogs while the gardens provide great play space.

Go Karting!

Kids will love a chance to get behind the wheel of an indoor go kart and wiz around the Randburg Raceway. If they already have experience they can take part in endurance races and even a grand prix!

Skate Parks

Boogaloos skateboard parks at Montecasino and Brightwater Commons have two excellent and safe indoor facilities and one outdoor. Bring along your own skateboards, skates or rollerblades and trick bikes if you have them/ if not, don't worry as you can buy skateboarding equipment at one of the Boogaloos stores in Brightwater Commons, Montecasino or the Cresta Shopping Centre. This park is great for kids of all ages (that includes parents!).

Exciting rides

Gold Reef City theme park has fantastic and often scary rides (31 of them in total.) Get the kids to try out the anaconda, the earthquake tunnel, miner’s revenge, the tower of terror and the river rapids; and that's just for starters! There’s also a funfair for little ones with much gentler rides. Kids under 1.2m get in free!

Crafty Fun

For rainy days, why not get the kids to have a go at something a little artier? At the Colour Café in Hyde Square in Hyde Park, they can paint anything from fairies and money boxes to mugs and plates. Tea and coffee is available (for the grown-ups), plus cakes and muffins to munch on while your kids get creative!

Star gazing

Kids and adults alike will love the Planetarium. Gaze up at a starry sky, taking in the constellations and stars, their names and stories told by one of the helpful guides. Children will love the sparkle and adults, the romance. You'll never look at a night sky in the same way again!

Fun on Four Wheels

If the kids like noisy motorised fun, which they inevitably do, try the quad bikes at Daytona Adventure Park in Fourways. There are 18 quad bikes of various sizes, meaning children of 4 years and upwards are able to ride. For older kids there’s a guided ride where you'll head out into the bush and even cross rivers!

Lions and cubs

Go on a lion-spotting adventure drive around the 300-hectare Lion Park in Lanseria, 30km North West of Johannesburg. Enjoy the spectacular views and tranquil environment while your young cubs play with the lion cubs. Afterwards why not enjoy lunch or dinner in the gorgeous restaurant located in the park.

Endless Fun in the Sun

Sun City is a haven for kids…big and small! Where the sun always shines and the water is always blue, in this incredible water park, young and old can splash around in the water for hours. Try the Valley of the Waves, with its 2m waves that splash onto a manmade beach, to rides on a 17m high water chute. If you are after drier pursuits then there is more outdoors including horse riding, quad biking, riding elephants and archery to flying in a Tiger Moth plane!Nature Trails

Take a walk in the veld; enjoy the sound of birdsong and the rustling of grass in the breeze, brush against indigenous shrubs, or walk on a path cut out of a rocky hilltop. Just a suburb or two from the city centre and you’ll be stepping back half a million years into Johannesburg’s history, when Stone Age man left his tools at the top of the ridge. Open only three Sundays a month, for three hours, you can take a guided tour through the Melville Koppies many paths, or make your own way around if you prefer and take in the stunning views of the city and suburbs. Stop at the Iron Age furnace and the 400-year-old Tswana stone walls nearby. Book your flights to Johannesburg and take a step back in history!

Horsing Around

The oldest human bred horse in the world and ancestor of the Lipizzaner has been traced to Roman horses at the time Julius Caesar was Emperor of Rome. Lipizzaners are characterised by a perfect and noble physique, graceful movements, the ability to learn, liveliness, good nature, courage, toughness and stamina. In appearance they resemble in every respect the typical baroque show and parade horses. Performances by these stunning horses can be seen on Sunday mornings from 10.30am in the Indoor Arena. Come early and browse around the Lipizzaner Shop where you can buy children's T-shirts, DVD's, postcards and more! The performance lasts about 60 minutes and afterwards you can head to the courtyard to meet the riders and feed carrots to the stallions while enjoying refreshments, browsing a second hand book stall or watching the kids make the most of the bouncy castle in the grounds!
