Glasgow, Scotland isn’t for the faint of heart, and it’s definitely not for a person with a shrinking violet personality. Maybe that’s why I love it so much!
Yes, yes, Glasgow has everything that any other city has; museums and beautiful parks, zoos and picturesque fountains, but unlike Edinburgh where you can feel the weight of centuries and can close your eyes and imagine yourself living 500 years ago, Glasgow is the epitome of the modern European city.
Sleek and sophisticated, Glasgow has a reputation as a banking center and business Mecca, which is why, if you want real fun, you want to sample Glasgow’s nightlife, for once the banks and the businesses shut down, the city truly comes alive.
When it comes to nightlife in Glasgow the choices are seemingly endless; clubs and pubs and theaters and, well, chances are if you have a hankering for it, you’ll find it here. If you can’t decide what kind of club to go to try ‘Tiger Tiger’; an incredible night club, it takes up several floors and has different ‘styles’ of music and different atmospheres in each section. If you like black metal or awesome punk music, try the Cathouse, but my personal favorite is the Shack, a typical university club with lots of dance music and enough young and energetic people to keep you amused for a very long time.
But listen to me! You’d think that partying was the only thing to do in Glasgow – not so! The city does have its historic spots; University of Glasgow for one, Glasgow Cathedral for another, and don’t forget the Necropolis, one of the oldest and most fascinating cemeteries in the British Isles. Mind you, you have to go looking for the historic bits in Glasgow, but they are there, and when you find them, they are absolutely fantastic.
But if you really want some daytime fun, there are some truly eclectic attractions in Glasgow. Take the Willow Tea Rooms for example; tea, scones, and plenty of people to watch and listen to. Or how about the Gallery of Modern Art? A morning spent wandering through these truly eclectic collections is always an interesting switch, and if you get tired of the architecture and the museums’, try the shopping; you’ll find it all here, plus some you weren’t even aware existed. If the weather’s getting you down you might want to visit St. Enoch Shopping Centre; it’s only the largest glass-covered shopping center in Europe, or Argyll Arcade; another enclosed shopping center, this one with over thirty diamond shops. Personally, I love to go and drool over all those gorgeous creations – in some of the shops you can even watch them creating new pieces; quite amazing! Of course if you want a more authentic and traditional approach to your shopping, y ou might want to try the Barras Market which has a great selection of independent open stalls mixed with regular stores.
I’ve heard people say that Glasgow is a bore, but honestly, the ones that say that really don’t know where to look! Glasgow is definitely a city where you need to keep your eyes open and go with the flow, for you never know where the fun is going to crop up!
