If you want a true taste of Espana, then Barcelona is definitely the place you want to be! Whether you’re strolling down La Rambla, shopping in La Boqueria, or simply enjoying the fairy-tale style architecture of Gaudi, you won’t have a dull moment while visiting this Spanish jewel.Hi, it’s Shelby again, and I wanted to share with you some of my most favorite moments in Barcelona; of course, I won’t share with you my absolute favorite moment that would be a little too personal methinks, but suffice it to say that the overall atmosphere contributed to what turned out to be a definite night to remember!
There is nothing like the sultriness of Spanish air to put one in a romantic mood, and there is nothing like that suave Spanish accent to make your heart start thumping a hundred miles a minute! But it’s not all about trysts at open air cafes and dreamy conversations while watching the fountains (and Barcelona has its fair share of fountains) as the dance in their spotlights, there are plenty of things for every taste and budget here, so, shall we start with La Rambla? It’s probably one of the most well-known streets in the world, but this mile-long stretch has everything you could possibly imagine; performers, food, fortune tellers, dance troupe, artists and enough tourists to form their own ethnic group. Just pulling up a cafĂ© table and watching the human parade can eat up a whole afternoon, but you’ll want to take time out to stop at La Boqueria (a fantastic market that sells everything from jewelry to fresh produce and fish), and don’t be hesita nt to try one of the cafes that you’ll find dotted all up and down just about every street; ask for the Spanish Hot Chocolate, you’ve never had anything so delicious in your life!
If your tastes in architecture run to the strange and unusual (or you’re just in the mood for something slightly twisted) take a gander at the Sagrada Familia. It can’t decide if it wants to be a classic gothic cathedral or some sort of nightmare monstrosity out of a horror movie, but it works somehow, in a slightly twisted way.And speaking of twisted; Barcelona is the home to Picasso. Quite literally, it’s where he grew up and you can take tours of where his family lived and where he went to school and there is even a gallery that has records of his early life. And if you’re tired of touristy stuff, try on the night life! Barcelona has a grand auditorium known as L’Auditori which can seat up to 2,400 people and sports events from nearly every genre of music or, if you want something a little more classical, you can try out the Gran Teatre del Liceu, which has much more sedate (but absolutely gorgeous) musical offerings. And of course you can l iven it up by a trip to the Bikini or the Razzmatazz where live bands and musicians abound and the music is as hot as the accents.
You won’t be sorry you came, I’m not, and even though it’s time to move on to my next destination, I’ll always remember Barcelona fondly and with a smile in my heart!
