I don’t know about you, but when I think about Venice my head fills up with all sorts of romantic thoughts. I mean, come on, good food, good wine, riding in a gondola while being serenaded; what more could you ask for? Well, this is Venice after all, so there is a lot more than just Gondolas.

Hello, it’s me again and I’m here in Venice where you don’t have to be on your honeymoon or even with a significant other in order to enjoy the best of what Venice has to offer!

Seriously, there is so much to see and do here that I can’t even begin to describe it. Well, that’s not entirely true, I AM going to try to describe it, but I can guarantee that I’m not going to be able to cover it all! Not in the small amount of space I’m allotted here.Of course you want to try out the Gondolas, I mean, even if you’re here by yourself, there is no better way to see the city than from the viewpoint of the canals. That’s all this city seems to be made up of sometimes; canals. They’re everywhere and they use them for everything! But if you really want a mega dose of history (which Venice is quite literally dripping with) try standing in the middle of the piazza San Marco.

The piazza San Marco is a sight for sore eyes. This is the center of Venice, from the religious center (St. Mark’s basilica) to the Judicial center (Doge’s Palace) to the Torre dell’ Orologio (a Middle Ages clock tower) you won’t be disappointed. Of course if you want to see the whole package in one glance (Venice that is) you’ll want to go to the top of the Campanile. Campanile is the tallest building in Venice and was built over a thousand years ago and the view is spectacular. But if you get tired of viewing buildings, there is always the art.

Venice is home to some of the most renowned names in artistic history. Names like Titan, Tintoretto, Tiepolo and Canaletto called Venice home and their paintings are still on display today, but not in standard museums! That is the beauty of it – the works of these great masters can be seen in actual buildings; churches, state buildings and the like. Check out the Pieta and Ca’ Rezzonico, or if you really want a museum setting, you can go to the Gallerie dell’ Academia.

But Venice isn’t just about sightseeing, it’s also about doing. There is so much to DO in Venice. Try out some of the spectacular restraints or take up the Venetian habit of stopping into your favorite bar for an aperitivi (sort of an elegant happy hour). If you want to people watch while you enjoy this experience try out the Naranzaria where there are people coming and going all the time to provide great entertainment or stop in at the Boutique del Gelato is you want to cool off with a real Italian treat!

And then there is the nightlife. Nightlife in Venice is best experienced out of doors; the city was made for being out of doors. It is difficult to point out one particular ‘hot’ spot for nightlife in Venice. Rather, try strolling up and down the windy streets and watch as the small bars and clubs open their doors for the evening; many of them literally spill out into the streets, so there is no need to even worry about cover charges, the music and the night life comes to you! Of course, if you want some really unusual nightlife, you can head back to the Gondolas and take a ride up the Grand Canal. The Basilica Di San Marco, Venice’s most famous church, was built in 830 to house the body of St. Mark. The adjacent Piazza di San Marco (St. Mark’s Plaza) is the largest square in Venice and a great place to sit at one of the many outside cafes and relax, enjoy an overpriced drink or desert, and watch the people.

No matter what you do in Venice, it is sure to be an experience you’ll never forget. In fact, my Gondola’s here now, so I’ll see you all later, I’m off for a bit of romancing myself!Ciao!
