If there is one thing that you want to do, it’s going to be planning your visit to Toulouse to synchronize with one of the festivals that this awesomely beautiful (and very French) city offers every year.I’m here in Toulouse and I’ve got to tell you, this is the one place in France that can put Paris to shame, especially when there is a festival afoot. And there are a ton of festivals to choose from.Do you like the International arts and music scene? Then you will love the Toulouse International Fair in mid March. Over 150,000 people come to Toulouse each year just to attend, and each year boasts a different theme. Then of course there’s the Toulouse d’Ete. Hosted every August, the Toulouse d’Ete is a festival featuring over 400 musicians who perform all up and down the awesomely artsy looking streets of the city.
Or wait till September when the Piano aux Jacobins Festival is in full swing and you can listen to the world’s best pianists as they perform all types of classical music in a Toulouse monestary. Or you can wait till the Christmas Market comes to town in December and choose from hundreds of vendors for the absolutely perfect Christmas gift.
But even if you find yourself in Toulouse in between festivals, don’t be discouraged! The city itself is like an ongoing festival. Situated on the Garonne River, Toulouse is chock full of history; museums, street musicians and odd boutiques that sell the most awesomely random selection of merchandise you can imagine, and sprinkled all throughout the city are Tea Shops that serve some of the most awesomely rich treats you can imagine.
Of course if you want something more substantial you can try one of the street cafes in the Place du Capitola where you can order some fantastic coffee and wile away a few hours just people watching or wander through one of the areas renowned art museums where you can see a fantastic selection of artwork.
When it comes to night life, Toulouse is very much like Marseille in that it’s night life is focused on the out of doors, you can even get movie viewings out of doors in Toulouse, and the sedate daytime street cafes along the river turn into dance parties once the sun goes down, so in theory you could stay in one location and go from high tea to supper to dance club without ever having moved an inch.Of course there are indoor venues as well, such as the Gourmont Wilson or the UGC Toulouse. Both of these cinemas not only offer the very latest in cinema technology, but both of them also host film festivals (there’s the festivals again!) throughout the year. And of course, if you get tired off dancing in the street you can visit the Monsieur Carnaval, the Disco Le Maximo or Le New Shanghai, all of which offer a variety of dance music and standard club ambiance.
I prefer the impromptu street parties myself, signing off from Toulouse!
