Hosting a baby shower can be fun if the hostess plans games that are enjoyable for everyone. Not everyone will enjoy every game and some people dislike any kind of party game, but remember, you are planning an event for the mommy-to-be so your focus should be on what she will enjoy without trying too hard to please every person present.
One of the most basic games for a mommy-to-be who may not like over the top games is “Beat the Clock.” In this game, the hostess should pick a set amount of time, about 5 minutes. Set the timer as the mommy-to-be starts opening presents, when the timer rings, the person who gave the present the mommy is currently opening gets a prize.
Another low-key game is scratch-off tickets. These need to be ordered ahead of time. Place a scratch-off ticket at each seat. Most will have joke answers under the area to be scratched off, but several will be winning tickets. If possible, place one winning ticket at each table. The winners get a small prize.
The hostess can also plan a variety of guessing games. The hostess should provide string or ribbon. The guests should cut off a length they think will wrap comfortably around the mommy’s tummy without being too tight or too loose. Be careful with this game, though. If the mommy is sensitive about her growing belly, this might not be the best one to do. Another possibility is to have the guests write down their guesses for weight, date and time of birth. This will require follow up. The hostess will have to send a gift to the person with the closest guess for each category.
Another game that will require a little bit of prep work is the picture guessing game. The hostess should ask each guest to bring a baby picture of herself. If the guess list is quite long, the hostess may want to limit the pictures to the people closest to the mommy. The hostess should assemble a collage of the pictures with space provided for the guests to write in their guess of who is whom.
The hostess can also plan a “Baby Bingo” game. Try to match the number of bingo squares to the number of presents you anticipate the mommy receiving. In each square, write down either gifts that are commonly given at a baby shower (stroller, bibs, diapers) or gifts that have been bought from the mommy’s registry. As each gift is opened, the guests check items off their bingo cards. Whoever gets a “bingo” first wins a prize.
One other possibility is more an activity than a game. Provide a scrapbook or index cards (craft stores sell baby themed index cards that are cute to use for this). Ask guests to write down their best advice for new mommies. Another option is write down a memory of their days as new mommies. This can provide some very sweet memories when older family members share moments of the mommy- and daddy-to-be as babies.
Unique Baby Gifts and Baby Shower Favors for that special little person.
