One of Brisbane’s most popular leisure areas is South Bank Parklands. This was the site of the 1988 World Expo. The location borders the river across from the city and has been recently redeveloped to include tropical gardens, a swimming lagoon, a guarded beach and many cafes and restaurants. On weekends there are outdoor markets for crafters. The CityCat ferry takes commuters and visitors up and down the river with various points of interest along the way.
Long Pine Koala Sanctuary at Fig Tree owns the distinct honor of being the world’s oldest and largest koala sanctuary. It is not only home to koala but also kangaroo, emu, wallabies and wombat. The location is situated along the River so it is easily accessible by car or by boat. Mount Coot-tha is located 7km from the city and offers many scenic picnic locations along with amazing panoramic views of the lights of Brisbane in the evening.
From 1867 to 1932,St Helena Island, located just 7 kilometres from Brisbanes bayside suburb of Manly, was a penal settlement once regarded as worse than Alcatraz. Now a national park, this small island still bears the ruins of the prison that can be explored by day or night on special guided tours. On Moreton Island, a 75 minute catamaran trip from the city, there is nightly dolphin feeding at the islands Tangalooma Resort.Those who want to learn more about Brisbanes history and colonial architecture can follow a heritage trail which begins at the City Hall.
Things to see and do include:The City Hall Art Gallery and Museum open daily except public holidays; South Bank Parklands ” beautifully landscaped park with restaurants, cafs, a beach and swimming lagoon plus a cinema complex. Markets are on Friday nights and at the weekends; The Queensland Cultural Centre, home to the Queensland art gallery, Queensland Museum,Queensland performing Arts Centre and the brand new Queensland Gallery of Modern Art “Australias largest art gallery dedicated to modern art; Brisbane Botanical Gardens with its mangrove boardwalks and the River stage Ampitheatre;Roma Street Parklands ” the largest tract of subtropical rainforest in the city; Historic Fortitude Valley/New Farm with its trendy cafes, restaurants and lifestyle; The Riverside walk and cycle paths which link the Storey Bridge, the Botanic Gardens,the South Bank precinct and the riverside suburbs.
