Trichy, (short form of Tiruchirapally) is an industrial town located in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The major industries that have set up shop in Trichy are BHEL, OFT, HAPP and the Golden Rock Railway Work Shop among others. Trichy, situated on the banks of river Cauvery was also home to many famous dynasties like the Cholas, the Pallavas and the Pandyas. The 83 meter high Rock Fort, a historic fort and temple complex around which the town of Trichy is built, is said to be almost 3,800 million years old. Trichy is also well-known for its artificial diamonds, cigars, handloom clothes, glass bangles and wooden and clay toys.
Chennai (or Madras as it was called until recently), is the capital city of Tamil Nadu and the fourth largest metro in India. Chennai’s importance is not only because it is the capital of the state, but also due to the fact that it is the nerve centre of the culture and art forms of Tamil Nadu. There are innumerable schools and institutions imparting knowledge of art and dance as well as dramatics that can be found along the length and breadth of this wonderful metropolis. Moreover, the Tamil film industry, which is the second largest film industry of the country, is also based in Chennai.
The distance from Chennai to Trichy is around 330 km by road. Buses are the most common means of travel between both these cities. Many bus services ranging from Semi Deluxe to Hi-tech Airbus operate between Chennai and Trichy on a regular basis. The tickets cost anything from Rs 100 to Rs 400.
Taxis are also a good option to reach Trichy from Chennai, especially if one is travelling with infants and elders. Taxis will charge a fare to the upwards of 7000/- for a round trip, depending upon the type of car as well as the amenities offered.
Chennai and Trichy enjoy direct connectivity by means of rail. There are many express trains that ply between these two stations on a daily basis. The trains to Trichy depart from either of the two stations in Chennai – the Chennai Egmore (MS) or the Chennai Central (MAS) station. The Guruvayur Express (16127), Bbs Rmm Express (18496), Vaigai Express (12635), Thiruchendur Express (16735) and the Nagercoil Express (0637) are some of the direct trains available to travel from Chennai to Trichy. Online booking and advance booking of rail tickets are also possible. Travelling by train is recommended if travelling with family or in a group.
Trichy also enjoys direct air connectivity with Chennai. Kingfisher and Air India operate regular flights from Chennai to Trichy and the fare offered is also easy on the pocket.
