Question by Lizz Shadyhouse: How can I be happy if everything I do feels fake?
Since I was a little girl I have always worked on maintaining an image. A positive image in the eyes of friends, my parents and other family members or grown ups.

I’m 16 years old. I’m always at the top of my class. I am respectful towards everyone. My parents think I am, as they put it, a perfect child. I have never given them any reason to get angry at me or to doubt me in any sort of way. They feel like they trust me a lot. They let me do whatever I want because they don’t think I’ll ever do wrong. However, over the years I’ve done things they don’t know about. Such as smoking, drinking, stealing, and doing drugs.

Also, because teachers have always thought I’m such a model student, I have been able to get away with many things. I once got caught smoking in school and talked my way out of it.

Anyways, this was all great and all until just a few months ago. I started thinking and it feels like I don’t really fit in. Sure I have friends but I’m not like them. I have to pretend to be like them and it feels like I’m not really like that. By the way, I don’t hang out with any particular crowd. I have friends in all the different types of groups. Whether its the preps, goths, geeks, band geeks, book worms, math geeks, nerds, punks, skaters, drama club, choir, “special” people, non-conformists, gangsters, tomboys, jocks,or cheerleaders.

I don’t know, maybe I just don’t like people. I’m getting tired of pretending. Is there anything I can do to STOP??

Duh. Just be real as a mofo and try your damndest to finish school. Trust me when I say the fakeness ends after high school. Then people get real. High school is a bunch of kids who think they’re trying out for a role on MTV. You sound crazy cool. Real too. I know it’s hard to step outside of yourself but hey, you are undeniably in the life stage where your hormones are going crazy and you are developing as a human being, as a mentality and an individual, The rest is about finding strength in humbling yourself and not letting fake people get to you but loving them just the same because they’re going through the crazy hormone thing too.

Welcome to the timeless wisdom of the ancient Greek philosophy of Stoicism. It can seem almost impossible to be happy and healthy in this results based age of materialism, the constant terrifying news in the media, coupled with the recent economic crisis. An age where stress and depression are so pervasive that they have become just another part of daily life for so many people. I am here to tell you it does not have to be this way.
